Bali for a first trip: choose your base before you book the room

A practical way to choose an area, plan transfers and compare the real cost of a Bali stay.

Bali can feel compact on a map and slow on the road. The easiest first-trip decision is not choosing the “best” resort; it is choosing the right base for the days you have. Plan fewer moves, allow breathing room for transfers and compare what is included before you commit.

Pick the trip shape, then the area

Seminyak, Canggu and Legian are often considered for dining, shops and a busier coastal scene. Ubud is an inland base for arts, gardens and day trips into central Bali. Sanur can suit a calmer seaside stay and connections toward nearby islands. Uluwatu appeals to travellers prioritising southern cliffs and surf, but can make cross-island day trips longer. These are broad planning cues, not a substitute for checking the exact property location and current road conditions.

For a week, one or two bases is usually easier to manage than moving every night. Put the first and last nights near the transport you need if arrival or departure times are awkward.

Build an itinerary with travel time in mind

  1. Arrival day: keep it light. Confirm the airport pickup meeting point, luggage allowance and what happens if your flight is late.
  2. Coast days: group nearby beaches, cafés or activities together rather than crossing the island for each booking.
  3. Inland day: choose a small number of stops and agree the pickup time and return plan with your driver or tour operator.
  4. Island add-on: only add an island transfer if the ferry or flight schedule fits your dates. Keep a buffer before an international departure.

Compare the whole stay, not the headline rate

Before choosing a hotel or villa, compare the total for the same dates and guest count. Check taxes, breakfast, airport transfers, pool or facility access, extra-person charges, deposits, cleaning fees, cancellation terms and whether the room is prepaid. For a villa, ask what is included in the displayed price and how check-in works if you arrive late.

Save the booking confirmation offline and keep the property’s contact details available. A transfer driver needs the correct property name and address, not only the neighbourhood.

Entry, local rules and safety checks

Entry requirements can depend on passport, trip purpose and transit route, and they change. Use official Indonesian immigration information and Australian Smartraveller before paying for a visa or completing arrival forms. Smartraveller warns travellers to use official government sites for arrival documentation and notes Bali’s visitor levy; verify current amounts, exemptions and payment channels directly before travel.

Respect local customs and follow official local guidance. Check the latest travel advice, weather, health information and transport notices close to departure.

A simple Bali budget worksheet

  • Flights and checked-bag costs
  • Stay total, deposits and any meals not included
  • Airport pickup and local transport for every planned day
  • Activities, entrance charges and guides
  • Data/eSIM, card fees and cash access
  • Visa, levy and other current entry charges after checking official sources
  • Travel insurance and a contingency reserve

Compare a villa with a hotel using the same group size and trip length. A kitchen or extra room may change the total; it does not automatically mean better value.
